This festival is very accurately described in the late Captain Forbes British Burma. The Farm Caves. --These caves are situated in an isolated mass of lime-stone rock, rising abruptly from the surrounding paddy fields, about 10 miles due east of Maulmain. By the Burmese they are known as the Ka-yon-Caves. They are easily accessible to visitors. Taking a gharry from the town the route lies through Cantonments, the Daing-wunkwin quarter of the town, and thence along the straight road through the paddy fields to the village of Naung-bin-saik on the banks of the Attaran. Leaving the gharry here, you cross the river in the ferry boat, and complete the journey on the other side in bullock-carts. A good metalled road runs right up to the entrance to the cave, the distance from the bank of the Attaran being about six miles. These caves, owing to their accessibility from Moulmein, have long been a resort for picnic seekers of all nationalities. The Farm Cave was at one time crammed full of images of Buddha and his faithful disciples, but these alas! have now for the most part been destroyed, and the smaller ones carried away as souvenirs of the visit. The large corridor to the right of the entrance was, even 15 years ago, full of figures in various postures, exhibiting scenes from Mahauthada, which describes one of the previous existences of Buddha. This cave probably now contains more empty beer bottles and sardine tins than sacred images!! Those that remain are for the most part headless and mutilated. A recumbent figure in the central hall forty-five feet in length is still an object of adoration to the inhabitants of the adjacent village.
