Sample song profile from A Hard Day's Night A Hard Day's Night The official story is that "A Hard Day's Night" was written ten hours after the producer for the movie had asked for it. It took only three hours to record. Ringo said: "We went to do a job, and we'd worked all day and we happened to work all night. I came up still thinking it was day I suppose, and I said, 'It's been a hard day.' and I looked around and saw it was dark so I said, '.night!' So we came to A Hard Day's Night." Joey Ramone of The Ramones said: "The opening chord of the song was like an amazing wake-up call." With that chord of this song the Beatles had raised the bar for all pop songwriting. The chord is a powerful attention-grabber- a G7, that is considered unique in that it is neither major nor minor- but hangs in the air with disturbing inevitability. The pause after the opening chord is the first example of how suspense and a sense of rising expectation are created by a change of pace. A large part of this specific effect is the surprise factor, especially as you experience it at the beginning of the film or the album. George Martin remembers: "In those days, the beginnings and endings of songs were things I tended to organize. We needed something striking, to be a sudden jerk into the song. In.

I came up still thinking it was day I suppose, and I said, ‘It’s been a hard day...’ and I looked around and saw it was dark so I said, ‘...night!’ So we came to A Hard Day’s Night.” Joey Ramone of The Ramones said: “The opening chord of the song was like an amazing wake-up call.” With that chord of this song the Beatles had raised the bar for all pop songwriting. George Martin remembers: “In those days, the beginnings and endings of songs were things I tended to organize. We needed something striking, to be a sudden jerk into the song. In the fade out I stressed to them the importance of making the song fit- not actually finishing it but dangling on so that you’re into the next mood.” Although Lennon had composed the track and was the lead singer- he needed McCartney’s help because he couldn’t reach all the notes. A key part of the song is the wall of sound effect is partly the result of the drumming style being kept unvaried throughout. Ringo provides wall-to-wall thumping on drums and cymbals instead of the usual drum fills and texture changes. This monolithic approach to percussion adds to the steam-rolling thrust of the track. It’s been said that George Harrison’s solos in the song became the founding sound of folk rock. It’s melodically unconventional- yet very bluesy at the same time. This was the song where the characteristic sound of George’s twelve-string guitar would firmly establish itself. The appearance in the opening and closing chords, as well as the manner in which it is doubled with electric piano in the solo section are among the more instantaneously recognizable sound bites in all of popular music. Introduced by a raspy shriek of inhibition from Harrison’s guitar solo affords the song an elegant interlude amidst all of the number’s energy and desire. A Hard Day’s Night is a composition about Love, identified with Home. There is a division between innocence (the ecstasy of being “held tight”) and experience (things, making money, the tedium of work, suggested by the long repeated notes in the tune’s first phrase). It sees innocence and experience as interdependent; the freedom couldn’t be so lovely where it not for the tedium. Beatle Song Profiles is a unique educational tool to enable readers to learn about every song on all 12 albums The Beatles recorded. ______________ Sample song profile from Beatles For Sale “I Feel Fine” McCartney said the famous introduction to ”I Feel Fine” was accidental when Lennon placed his guitar against the wall too close to his amplifier. Another version by producer George Martin is that John always had the volume knob up high and he understood that he could exploit this. Thus the feedback was intentional. Lennon commented: “George and I play the same bit on the guitar together- that’s the bit that’ll set your feet- a-tapping, as the reviews say…..I defy anybody to find a record- unless it’s some old blues record in 1922- that uses feedback that way. I claim it for the Beatles.” The song was a mix of mainstream and avant-garde- spirit and energy that resulted in something truly unique. It remains to this day one of the most joyous and completely unpretentious celebrations of love in the history of pop music. “I Feel Fine” is a good example of The Beatles’ drawing on a rhythm and blues tradition while at the same time adding their own unique unexpected contrasts and unusual subtleties of melodic detail. Instead of using “ooh”s as in previous songs, they had already begun to seek other means of expressing excitement, involving mental and vocal techniques. Paul and George’s high harmony in the refrain when they sing I’m in love with her and I feel fine is the highlight of the song. Another is Ringo’s drumming which can only be defined as “soul-jazz” like a “Latin R&B shuffle.” He would later comment: “When I’d do a fill I always felt I went into a blackout. I didn’t know what I’d do.” “I Feel Fine” is about how the speaker has a very loving relationship with a woman that makes them both happy. He is also proud that he has enough disposable income and generosity to give his girlfriend jewelry. However, the statement that he gives her plural "rings", as opposed to one special diamond ring, suggests that he simply buys her diamonds to win her over rather than as a sign of commitment. It’s implied or insinuated that the reason this woman "loves" the author so much and is so "good to" him is that he buys her material things. He does seem so happy and so unaware, but you see little hints slipping through. He's going by her say-so in the relationship and being lead about by the heartstrings, but really he's just being used. There is a much darker tone to the composition than it would initially appear. The song profiles describe the song's origins and inspiration, what The Beatles themselves said about it, what was unique about the music and/or production of the arrangement or vocals, and the deeper meaning of the lyrics. Sample profile from the Rubber Soul Nowhere Man Nowhere Man marked the beginning of Lennon's overtly philosophical musings even though the official story is that he came up with this after struggling to write the song: "I thought of myself sitting there, doing nothing and getting nowhere. So I just lay down and tried to not write and then this came out, the whole thing came out in one gulp." McCartney commented: "He had told me he'd written it about himself, but was clever enough to say, 'Isn't he a bit like you and me?'" The protagonist in the composition is The Beatles' first genuinely literary character. It broke much thematic ground offering a critique of social detachment and apathy and demolished the unstated rules for content of a pop song. Leaving behind the typical subjects such as love, cars, and parental constraints- it explores what the philosopher Michael Frankel termed "the law of function," a state wherein individuals resemble machines more than "conscious spiritual organisms." Typical of many John Lennon compositions are the "falling" melodie.

Leaving behind the typical subjects such as love, cars, and parental constraints- it explores what the philosopher Michael Frankel termed “the law of function,” a state wherein individuals resemble machines more than “conscious spiritual organisms.” Typical of many John Lennon compositions are the “falling” melodies, which can be heard quite clearly in Nowhere Man. Folk music often has falling melodies, indicating melancholy. In Baroque music, a falling melody means sadness. John’s self-loathing hits a boiling crest, folding in restlessly on itself. The monotony in the melody and the chugging, chiming guitar lines exacerbate the feelings of worthlessness which spread throughout the song creating a feeling of complete isolation. Rarely, with perhaps Bob Dylan being the exception, do pop musicians display so much humanity and honesty in such a baring, bruising manner. McCartney remembers that the band wanted very “treble-y guitars” on “Nowhere Man” to create a very thick, textured instrumental layer as Lennon and Harrison play their guitar solos in unison. McCartney’s bass line is bouncy and fun to listen to is in perfect counterpoint to the guitars. One aspect which strikes the listener in the arrangement is the vocals of the three part harmonies. Although they sing together, as a group, it comes through as sounding as one which mirrors the subject of loneliness- which is the focus of the track. Lennon’s melody is sandwiched in-between McCartney’s higher and Harrison’s vocals. This adds to the expression of the lyric’s sense of misplacement in the “nowhere-land” of the song’s focus. Interpreting the underlying meaning of the composition, Tim Riley writes: “Lennon sings for the unsung, the people who have shut themselves off from the life; but the glowing timbre is hopeful. The communal surge in the ensemble warms the sentiment with a rejuvenating interplay- no one can make it through life’s difficulties alone, the music seems to be saying, and the best crutches are other people.”, Format Kindle, Arjon Publishing.
