Europe in 1884 on a cloth-backed reproduction of a map published by Edward Stanford, presenting the continent at the height of its great empires: imperial Russia with Finland and much of Poland, united Germany including Alsace and part of Lorraine, the Austro-Hungarian Empire (although already post the Compromise, still shown here as one country) with north-western Balkans, and the Ottomans still with Albania and much of the present-day Greece. Hachures indicating the mountain ranges are in most places printed very faintly so names of towns and numerous geographical region marked on the map are easy to read. The map also has an unusually large number of names of smaller rivers. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5° intervals.Each individual cloth-backed map is sold folded in a colourful case covered with a unique design marbled paper – no two cases are identical.PLEASE NOTE: this title is also available as a wall map in two different sizes in the “Stanfords Classics Collection of Historical Maps”. A cloth-backed map of India “Constructed with great care and research from all the latest authorities and intended more particularly to facilitate a reference to the Civil and Military Stations. Dedicated to Sir James Rivett Carnac Bart, Chairman of the Court of Directors of the Honourable The East India Company, Arranged under the direction of Captain R.M. Grindlay” and published in 1838 by James Wyld, geographer to the Queen.The map shows the individual states in different colours, with names of towns underlined to indicate stations of the Bengal, Bombay and Madras Armies, all listed in separate tables cross-referenced to the map. The table also list, where appropriate, collectorates and zillahs, as well as civil stations in the North Western and Bengal provinces. A separate table lists British territories, British allies and tributaries, and the independent states of Hindoostan. Another interesting feature is an extensive distance table, Agra to Bangalore 1324 miles!This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a “cloth-dissected” map, made when the map itself was cut into sections and each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style and the feeling of the original. Infirmities and Asymmetries in Industrial Clusters, Small and medium enterprises (SME) have attracted increasing interest in the last few years, and industrialization is no longer seen as a linear way of development. This book analyzes how SME clusters emerge in a developing economy. Using India as a case study, it addresses one central question: If growth has largely failed to be inclusive so far, and if employing a work force in increasing returns activities through a different trajectory of industrialization is largely dependent upon industrial clusters of small and medium sized firms, then what are the structural infirmities and asymmetries that need to be taken into account in the context of framing policies related to industrial clusters?The book identifies the structural infirmities in industrial clusters in India, which could be typical to any of the developing countries and sharply in contrast to European success stories.
