Excerpt: . led us to the exact spot where he had fallen in this plain of Alsace, where so many famous fights had been fought and where so many brave men had lost their lives. Greatly moved at the sight of the wrecked machine, we saluted and stood in silent prayer. In the hope of taking our minds off this sad subject and especially for the sake of Paul Rockwell, who was utterly overcome at the thought of never seeing again his dearly loved brother, with whom he had shared the hardships of the Foreign Legion, I decided to drive home by Giromagny and the Ballon of Alsace. The wonderful grandeur of the scenery soothed our grief a little by giving us something else to think about. With the same object I stopped at the crest of the Ballon for lunch. It was a warm day and we sat down at the foot of the monument of Jeanne d Arc, Lorraine s greatest daughter, near a clear spring. Our hearts were very heavy, but nature all around us was full of life and sunshine and during so pitiless a war one had to force one s self to give way to sorrow. The funeral took place on the 25th of September. All the civil and military inhabitants of Luxeuil were present. The townsfolk had stripped their gardens for flowers to deck our comrade s bier. In the cemetery, before the coffin, hidden beneath flags and flowers, it devolved on me to pay a last tribute to our dead friend. I could give no higher praise than to tell simply what he had done. The following day Lufbery set out with redoubled ardour and as everything required had now arrived, the other pilots were also able to begin work. Just at that time my turn for leave came round, so I went off to Biarritz, after having asked Captain Happe if he knew the date of our mission. As he replied that he didn t expect it would.
