In 1749, the time of holding the festival was again changed, and the meeting took place on the 19th and 20th September. The performances at the Cathedral included each day one of Mr. Handels Grand Te Deums, and two of his most celebrated Anthems. The first evenings concert at the Assembly House consisted of the whole of the Pastoral Masque of Acis and Galatea. On the next evening was produced what was no doubt regarded by many of the good folks of Sarum as the most striking and interesting feature of the festival, viz. , The Grand New Overture and Musick composd by Mr. Handel for the Royal Fireworks exhibited in London on occasion of the rejoicings for the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. A duet from Judas Maccabeus, and a Grand Concerto for a Trumpet, Kettle Drums, fcc. constituted the remainder of the first part of the concert, the second part consisting of the celebrated Ode written by Mr. Dryden for St. Cecilias Day, and set to Musick by Mr. Handel. Each evenings concert was followed by a ball. The usual assistance for (what the advertisements term) this great performance was obtained from Oxford, Bath, and other places. In 1750, a closer approach to the character of the present musical festival was made by the introduction of an entire oratorio at one of the evening concerts. The following account of this years performances appears in the Salisbury Journal of October 8th. On the 4th and 5th of this Month was celebrated in this City, the Musical Festival of St. Cecilia.
