This honest and unforgiving memoir describes the challenges faced by a bright, inquisitive child, Liz, and her survival strategies as she grows up in western Pennsylvania in the 1950s. As far back as Liz could remember, she and her older brother had played in the two woods near their housing project - the “little” woods where they had their mother’s permission to play, and the “big” woods where they were not allowed to go. Their mother had told them the “big” woods had gypsies who would drive through from time to time and kidnap children. Despite the warning, Liz and her brother preferred the “big” woods and Liz always hoped that one day the gypsies would take her with them so she could lead a new life. Before Liz finishes first grade, her father disappears, her mother acquires a new husband and the whole family, including Liz and her three siblings, move from a housing project outside of Pittsburgh to a small town in the country where the children’s new stepfather is the town’s only black resident. Between ages six and twelve, Liz moves with her family through seven homes, including a shack they bought and worked on until it was livable, two houses without running water, one without electricity, an orphanage for the children, and three brief stays with friends when the family was homeless for a few weeks. Ultimately, they bought a house of their own in Garfield, a neighborhood half an hour by streetcar from downtown Pittsburgh.
