The books of Samuel and Kings are evidently compiled from materials left by Samuel himself and other eminent prophets of Israel. The prophets were the national historians, and the Jews counted these books as belonging to the prophetical writings. The larger portion of them must have been compiled before the Captivity (see note on 1 Sam. Xxvii. Though it is, of course, unknown at what exact date, or under whose hand, they assumed their present shape.
