This two-volume work offers a comprehensive history and description of The Palace of Christian VII at the royal castle, Amalienborg, in Copenhagen. The palace was created by the architect Nicolai Eigtved, whose richly varied, yet carefully controlled style secured him a position among the foremost representatives of Rococo in European architecture. The palace was built for King Frederik V’s friend and counsellor Adam Gottlob Moltke, and through a combination of ambition, good taste and ample financial resources he made the mansion – with its sumptuous interiors – the most impressive private residence in Denmark. Later refinements were made by leading architects of the epoch, N.-H. Jardin and C. F. Harsdorff. When Christiansborg Palace burnt down two years after Moltke’s death, Christian VII bought the mansion and made it his residence – hence its present name and the title of this book. After the king’s death in 1808, the mansion’s state suite continued to be used by the Court for banquets and ceremonies. From 1885 onwards, the ground floor and the mezzanine provided guest apartments for the visiting heads of state. The Palace of Christian VII has retained this double function of representation and hospitality – especially after the extensive restoration carried out between 1982 and 1996. Fortunately, ever since 1794, the owners and users of the building have shown considerable interest in protecting the fine interiors from the Moltke era. Alterations and modernizations, however, have proved necessary. The Palace of Christian VII – Amalienborg provides not only a detailed account of the process of building and furnishing the mansion in the 1700s, but the history of all later changes and developments, concluding with the recent restoration and redecoration.
