The first innings was well contested on both sides, and that of the lawyers was singularly interesting, inasmuch as it was to Mons. P. du Chaillu and his foster brother that they were mainly indebted for their score being raised to five plus the antagonistic total. The former of these two African Peripatetics was ever prest daccomplir, while the Gorilla played with such ease and freedom as to suggest the idea of his having adapted the cocoanuts and the bamboo of his native forest to the practice of the noble game. But the second innings told a different tale: 37 was all that the Peripatetics could jointly contribute towards the required septuagint, and they who had all day long been sweetly schooled in epicurean philosophy were now forced to become stoics under the pressure of adverse fortune. The re-appearance of the bloated aristocrat was gratifying. May Lawries laurels be ever green. P. du Chaillu. The Gorilla was R. Forster, a very good fellow, who also played for the Quidnuncs, and for some time acted as their Secretary. Once or twice his name appears on the West Kent side.
