E. duMOS.A "Mallee" (of the Lachlan and Darling Rivers).--A dwarf or shrubby species, with a smooth whitish persistent bark, and exceedingly dense growth, forming impenetrable "scrubs"; leaves usually alternate, from oblong or almost ovate and obtuse to lanceolate falcate and acuminate, 3 to 4 inches long, thick and smooth, the veins not conspicuous; flowers 4 to 8, sessile or shortly pedicellate on short axillary or lateral peduncles, the operculum hemispherical, umbonate or conical, shorter than the calyx-tube; fruit obovoid-truncate or almost oblong, about 3 lines long, the capsule more or less sunk. Habitat, scrubs and deserts on the Lachlan and Darling Rivers; also the Euryalean Scrub and the Blue Mountains. Timber of no use, but the leaves are said to contain an essential oil, and may therefore some day be turned to account. (Sir Thomas Mitchell regarded the above as "the most unpleasing of shrubs to a traveller," and describes it as "a lofty bush with a great number of stems, each 2 or 3 inches in diameter; and the bushes grow thickly together, having between them nothing but the prickly grass in large tufts.") 151.
