In retrospect it has become more and clear that David Smith is one of the great sculptors of the century and the first of the American sculptors to have succeeded in absorbing the achievements of the European tradition in the first half of the century (through a most personal adoption of the principles of Surrealism and Constructivism and a profound appreciation of the welded sculpture of Picasso and Gonzalez) and in channeling it towards the leading achievements of American art, which made its own breakthrough with the artists of the New York School around mid-century. Opportunities in this country to see works by Smith have been extremely few. In the permanent collections, and conspicuous in its solitude, Cubi Vi, 1963,1ca,- 411 has stood in the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden at the Israel Museum since it was donated by Meshulam Riklis and his wife Judith Stein-Riklis, New York, in 1973. Recently, in 1998, it was joined in the Israel Museum collection by Voltrun XII,1"t- 441 as part of the Bequest of Anne Wertheim-Werner, New York. Likewise, over the years a number of drawings by David Smith have been donated to the Israel Museum's collections, fcat. 13-15,181 but for lack of causa) contexts for displaying them they too have hardly been seen in the exhibition spaces. At temporary exhibitions the Israeli viewer has so far had two opportunities to see a number of isolated but definitely important works of David Smith. At the excellent "American Art in the Twentieth Century: The Tel Aviv Museum Hosts the Museum of Modern Art, New York" exhibition held in the spring of 1980, we were privileged to see Australia, 1951. The first important showing ofa of David Smith's sculptures in Israel took place at an exhibition held at the Tel Aviv Museum in 1987 titled' Hundred Years of Modern Sculpture: The Patsyand Raymond Nasher Collection". The nix sculptures byDa Smith displayed here constituted a fascinating sampl the sculptor's total oeuvre — from the earliest work collection, House in a Landscape: Rural Landscape w, Manless House, 1945, in which frustrating elementsof Surrealist alienation were still present in the sculpture', interior and exterior spaces, through several works in the element of drawing and the formalistic considerat were more dominant, such as The Forest, 1950; 9115153, 1953; Tower Eight, 1957; Untitled (Voltri), 1962, tothe work resembling a "Wagon" carrying "Chopped Clou from the series dope in Spoleto concurrently with the "Festival of the Two Worlds" — Voltri VI, 1962. ThisNas most comprehensive exhibition of sculpture ever tobe in Israel, and the group of sculptures by David Smith certainly one of the most important in the collection.
