What makes the expedition to Punt of great interest, is that it indicates one of the commercial routes of antiquity. If we descend a little lower in the history of the XVIIIth Dynasty, as far as the reign of Amenothes III, we reach the curious correspondence on the tablets of Tell el Amarna-We see the constantly renewed demands of the kings of Mesopotamia to the king of Egypt to send them gold, evidently to enable them to have it fashioned, for from Asia the Pharaohs received those beautiful vases that we see represented on the walls of the temple and in the tombs. Where did the kings of Egypt find the gold evidently in the interior of Africa, in Punt, from which we see the ships of Hatshopsitu bring back considerable quantities of it. The Pharaohs will send that gold into Mesopotamia, where it will be fashioned into beautiful vases, and either returned to Egypt, or be sent in the direction of the Mediterranean, and perhaps carried over the sea by the Phoenicians. We can thus reconstruct a sufficiently long chain, starting from Central Africa and reaching to the anterior part of Asia, or perhaps even into Greece. We know others, and can affirm that more will be found. The ancient nations had far more communication with each other than was supposed a few years ago, especially commercial relations, which were not thought of, because no written documents existed to tell us about them.
