Excerpt from The Canadian Practitioner and Review, Vol. 45: January to December, 1920 Probably very few, if any, physicians in Ontario have any doubt regarding the value of vaccination as an operation, which, if successful, will prevent smallpox. We desire to call attention to the fact that the methods of performance, as recommended by the head authorities at Washington, as well as heads of the Connaught Laboratories, are greatly superior to methods formerly used. Heretofore, two methods have been generally adopted. In one, called abrasion, the cuticle is scraped until a little serum appears, when the vaccine is applied. This prolonged scratch ing is somewhat painful and very unpleasant. In the other, which is known as Condie s method, linear incisions are made from one-half a-line to a line to 1/ 10 inch) in length, and these are crossed by other incisions at right angles to the first, one of the advantages claimed being the many lines of absorbing surface obtained.
