Pablo Cuvi was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1040 but he grew up in Manta, a port city and thus has roots on the Coast and in the Sierra. He earned his B.A. in sociology and political science from the Central University of Ecuador; where he later taught philosophy and history. In 1977, he published "Velasco Ibarra: el ultimo caudillo de la oligarquia" a work containing one of the finest interviews of a political figure in Ecuador. Cuvi's essays and photos have appeared in a variety of magazines. He has also published a collection of theater pieces and cinematographic stories. A number of his stories and theater pieces have been included in anthologies and have appeared in English and German transalations. Cuvi has also filmed numerous reports for television and has written movie scripts. For his efforst in these fields, Cuvi has earned a series of awards, such as the National Short Story Prize and the Jorge Mantilla Ortega award for the best interview. In this volume the subject of his photos and essays is the coast of Ecuador. It contains travel chronicles and photos of the nation's richest region in terms of agriculture, fishing and industry. "In many cases, I have covered routes that did not appear in my first travel book, including the train ride to the Coast by way of the Devil's Nose and canoe trips through the Cojimies inlet. On other occasions, I have returned to beaches and fishing villages only to find them polluted by the garbage of these modern times.
