This is a new, full of photographs book. Amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and habitat.138 pages (13" by 9"), softcover, more than 200 great photographs. For each photo depicted in this book, general information and the scientific and common names (English and Spanish) are provided. A source of delight for those who enjoy nature. Ecuador belongs to the select elite of the 17 megadiverse countries of the world. 17 countries --which also include Brazil, Colombia, and Indonesia -- host between 60 and 70 % of the earth's biodiversity ECUADOR is special because it is the smallest It is estimated that the value of the Ecuadorian biodiversity is 20.000 billion dollars Ecuador belongs to the select elite of the 17 megadiverse countries of the world. Megadiverse countries are those that due to their geographic position, environmental features, and history have an enormous amount of different kind of organisms. These 17 countries --which also include Brazil, Colombia, and Indonesia -- host between 60 and 70 % of the earth's biodiversity. For this reason, they are the most important for the conservation of biological resources. Even within these unique and select group of countries, ECUADOR is special because it is the smallest. Despite of a territory of just 256.370 sq. Km, it ranks eight on the list of megadiverse countries of the world. It should be noted that a significant portion of Ecuadorian biodiversity awaits discovery, for example in the case of amphibians the first species were describe during the 18th century. Since then, the number has increased steadily. At present a total of 421 species are recognized if the present rate of increase is maintained, it is predicted that the number of Ecuadorian amphibians would be 492 by the year 2015. The reason for this high diversity are many and are not completely understood. It is assumed that the latitudinal position and ecological gradients related to high habitat diversity --paramos, cloudforests, rainforests, etc.-- are fundamental factors. Biodiversity is a valuable resource. It is estimated that the value of the Ecuadorian biodiversity is 20.000 billion dollars. The environmental reserves that Ecuador offers to the planet make the conservation of its resources a high priority. Only by protecting it's diversity will economic and social prosperity of future generations be guaranteed, Paperback, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2001-01-27.
