A book of teachings given according to Atisha's lineage of explanation as passed through the Kadampa. There are two teachings in the book: one on taking refuge in the Three Jewels and one on the development of bodhichitta. Both teachings contain many stories and quotes from the early Kadampa masters. The teachings are translated from the Collected Works of the Hermit of Mandong. The hermit was a Kagyu master who lived in caves in the Mandong area of Tibet. He lived during the latter half of the 20th century after the Communist Chinese invasion and was particularly well-known for making sure that the local and very impoverished people received teachings on Buddha dharma that they really could understand and practice. Thus, the teachings are very oriented to traditional Tibetan mind but they come with a tremendous amount of love and sincere concern for the audience. This alone makes them very interesting. In addition though, his teaching here is a very complete teaching on refuge, something that seems to get passed over these days in Western Buddhism. It is a very interesting book for these reasons. This is one of Lotsawa Tony's personal favourites...
