Beginning in the middle of this century, excavations conducted by the University of Pennsylvania at the Phrygian capital of Gordion have produced many important finds, among the most significant being the wooden objects recovered from several tumuli at the site. Various types of wood were used to make the carved and inlaid furniture from Gordion, which is now considered to be the largest, best preserved, and most beautiful collection of ancient wooden furniture to survive from Anatolia, and indeed from the entire ancient Near East. Most of these marvelous wooden objects were found in three royal tombs, Tumulus P, Tumulus W, and Tumulus MM, all dating to the eighth century B.C. After excavation, the objects were removed to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara, where they remained in storage, without treatment, for a quarter of a century. In 1981, Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Simpson initiated a project to study and conserve the Gordion wooden objects, with financial support provided by the University of Pennsylvania and the many friends of the Gordion furniture listed in the acknowledgments of this publication. The project has continued to this day and now sets the standard for the conservation of dry archaeological wood. During this 18 year period, the conservation of almost all the wooden objects has been completed, and several of the finest pieces have been reconstructed by Prof. Simpson and her team, with the help of the museum's conservation staff. These have been placed on display in the Phrygian section of the museum, where they can now be appreciated as part of the world's cultural heritage. In the next few years, more wooden objects will be restored for display.
