review by BENJAMIN G. DEFENSOR http://bworldonline.com/Weekender102105/stayin3.php A superficial assessment of the title of this book is that it is one more tract in the battle of the sexes. This subject is the philosophy of man but given the sexist connotation of Man is Being or Being is Man, the title may have been politically corrected to Being is Person. In fact, Being is Person by Fr. De Torre is a tour de force on the human person -- he traces the spiritual, intellectual and social history of the human being starting from Aristotle through the different philosophical and social movements in time to the present. On the way, he cites the major thinkers who contributed to this story but always keeping to the idea that man is the crowning creation of the Creator. Fr. De Torre is Professor Emeritus of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P). He teaches social ethics, social economics and modern philosophy. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Angelicum, in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1955 for the Opus Dei prelature. He spent 13 years in pastoral activities and teaching before coming to the Philippines in 1968 as chaplain of the Center for Research and Communication, which is now the UA&P. In Being is Person, Fr. De Torre expounds and brings to the student and the man on the street the personalist philosophy of the late Pope John Paul II. Personalism is a modern philosophical movement locating ultimate value and reality in persons, human or divine. Paperback, Label: University of Asia and the Pacific, University of Asia and the Pacific, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2005, Studio: University of Asia and the Pacific, Verkaufsrang: 11419812.
