Cotabato Manobo is the language spoken by some ten to fifteen thousand Manobo people living in rural mountain areas on the island of Mindanao, Philippines. Traditionally a semi-nomadic, illiterate and slash-and-burn agricultural society, the Manobo have recently begun to settle in villages. They highly value their own language and culture, and interest in literacy has increased dramatically in recent years. The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) began work among the Cotabato Manobo in 1955, and over the years many dedicated workers have labored to bring literacy, churches, New Testament translations and medical facilities to the people of this challenged area. In 1988 the Association of Manobo Bible Churches was incorporated, with 35 congregations joining initially. Believing that the Bible in understandable form is basic to the life and growth of the church, Christians from many denominations and locations have had a part in funding and praying for the completion of this and other New Testament projects.
