Stock in Russia. Censorship in postwar Belorussia, 1944-1956. The present study was carried out at the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Center at Tel Aviv University. Its subject is censorship and its influence on all spheres of life as was the case in postwar Soviet Belorussia. Censorship and freedom of speech are opposites and between them maintain the delicate balance of power between a free society and a totalitarian state. Freedom of speech means the right of a person to freely express his/her thoughts and feelings both orally and in writing (freedom of the press and the mass media). However, in conflicts between individual citizens, the state may be correctly called upon to hold the ring and regulate the conflict. Among the legitimate purposes of such regulations are the protection of an individual's good name, reputation and personal dignity, as well as the maintenance of national security, civil order, health and morality, and, of course, the handling of copyrighted material. Censorship in Belorussia bore all the basic traits of the Soviet era. Through its utilization the State was able to establish an all-encompassing control over the life and social behavior of its citizens. If before the War the main task of censorship had been to fight an internal enemy, after the War this was replaced by an external enemy in the form of "international imperialism" that was seen as a threat to the regime and to the personal power of the General Secretary of the Communist Party, Joseph Stalin..
