The book opens with an article by Shlomo Lotan entitles, "St. Louis' Pilgrimage to Nazareth: A Reflection of Nazareth and Lower Galilee in the Mid-Thirteenth Century". The chapter provides a short history of Nazareth during the Crusaders' reign in Palestine. Lotan concludes that Nazareth became one of the most important holy sites under Christian control, but was more of a spiritual destination than a seat of any real power, and so it remained until the fall of the Latin Kingdom in 1291. Yehoshua Frenkel follows with a description of Nazareth after the fall of the Crusaders. His paper, entitled "Between Mongols and Ottomans: Nazareth in the Mamluk Period", analyzes the limited information that exists on Mamluk Nazareth. It opens with an account of the Sultanate's administration, before reflecting on the handful of contemporary reports on its topography and society, including several written sources by European travelers. The closing section considers a number of pertinent historiographical questions.
