Quarto. XXIX, [5], 566pp. Original illustrated wraps. Photographic frontispiece of Henry J. Leir. Sixth volume in the "Henry J. Leir Library of Sephardica: Text and Studies" series. Yosef Ha-Kohen was among the first to discover López de Gómara's work and, animated by his desire to bring it to the attention of a Jewish readership, he set out to translate both volumes into Hebrew, so that his fellow Jews would learn that "there are many lands in the world where the ships of King Solomon never ventured. To illustrate Yosef Ha-Kohen's technique of condensing and adapting the effusive rhetorical style of López de Gómara's narrative chronicles, and using at the same time an outstanding command of the biblical language to enhance the historical importance of the discoveries, we shall present here a few passages from both parts of the chronicle, i.e., the "Book of the New India" and the "Book of Cortés," in Spanish and Hebrew, including as well one passage in Hebrew facing a modern English adaptation." Fine condition.
