"This volume is based on a conference that took place at Hungarian Culture Foundation, Budapest in April 2000. Originally a meeting of scholars from East and West was planned within the frames of a UNESCO program called Dialogue between Cultures. This project proclaims the importance of the protection of the world cultural tangible and intangible heritage as a common ground for the promotion of mutual understanding among cultures and civilizations. UNESCO has adopted a decision which proclaims 2002 as the United Nations Year for Cultural Heritage. Shamanic traditions, however deeply rooted in different ethnic folklores, are truly belong to the common cultural heritage of mankind. In this context, in 1998 the Korean National Commission for UNESCO launched a medium-term project on shamanism heritage entitled ""Discovery of Shamanic Heritage"". As the first step an International Symposium was held, in cooperation with the Korea Performing Arts Center in Seoul, Korea. In 2000, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO and its Hungarian counterpart, together with the International Society for Shamanistic Research decided to organize the second symposium of the project on shamanic heritage in Budapest, Hungary. For the four day symposium some two dozens of experts came together from Korea, U.S.A., Russia, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Hungary. The meeting was a success in terms of scholarly debates and genuine presentations including some film documents on shamanic rituals from different cultures. In the course of discussions, the cultural value of shamanism has been re-evaluated as the heritage of humanity, the important source of performing arts, and a reservoire of traditional knowledge. For the sake of difference, we have modified the original title of our symposium, therefore here we use Rediscovery (in the title of this book) which is more appropriate to signify the most recent tendencies in the development of shamanistic research.
