"Scholars and musicologists have known for some time about the existence of an extraordinary treasure of Hungarian origin lying hidden in the library of Istanbul's Topkapi Sarayi: a codex collecting the prayers and antiphonals of the whole officium, or Catholic liturgical year, complete with musical notations. Yet the codex could not be properly studied, restored or photographed until last year, and the public at large knew nothing about it at all. With the help of both heads of state, President Demirel of Turkey and President Göncz of Hungary, the badly damaged hand-written codex was at long last restored and fully photographed. This work was carried out by staff of the National Széchenyi Library of Budapest. The special manner of the musical notation, coupled with the fact that the material includes the antiphonal of all Hungarian saints, leave no doubt that the liturgical codex originates from Hungary and was made around 1360 AD. It must have fallen into Turkish hands during the Conquest of a large part of Hungary by the Turks in the 16th century. The musical notes and the Latin text, written on parchment in Gothic characters, are richly decorated with beautiful artistic initials and marginal ornaments painted with tempera and portraying a variety of characters and scenes. The publication of this codex is a historic event both from the point of view of Hungarian and international musical scholarship and Hungarian publishing. Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest publishes the codex in a form befitting its extraordinary significance. The 304 folios (608 pages) will appear in a numbered facsimile edition in an ornamental box, along with a CD containing an hour-long audio recording of the Gregorian chants found in the book. The material is completed with studies in English, Hungarian and Turkish investigating the codex from the aspect of liturgical history, musicology, literature and art history.
