"Ferenc Erdei, one of the major figures of Hungarian sociology, came from a peasant family which had adopted middle-class ways. This environment influenced Erdei's works which primarily deal with the lives of peasant assuming middle-class lifestyles in a small-town setting, with peasants living under increasingly urban conditions, with urbanizing agricultural settlements in a country where this process was seriously hampered by the preponderance of great estates and the lack of democratic institutions. His first important work published in the series ""The Discovery of Hungary"" dealt with the peasantry in Central Hungary giving a thorough historical, economic and social analysis of their lives. Following this, he wrote a new sociological work almost every year. After the war he turned to the problems of cooperative farming. His work ""Agriculture and Cooperatives"" published in 1959 is of international importance. He later amplified his views in other books as well as in a series of articles. Concurrently with his scientific activity he filled a number of public functions: he was Chairman of the National Peasant Party, then Minister of Agriculture. He held the office of Secretary-General, then that of the Vice-President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and was again Secretary-General until the end of his life. The present volume is a selection from those of Erdei's writings which have had a major impact on the development of Hungarian sociology. The works included will be of invaluable interest to all researchers interested in the specifics of East-Central-European societal development and will provide a fine insight into the peculiarities of the Hungarian social structure.
