Published in 2001 in paperback by Hesperos Editions and in glossy full colour format, 72pp, this book is entitled 'Tiryns: A guide to its history and archaeology' and is written by Dr. Alkestis Papademetriou, Curator of Antiquities. About this book: The excavations at Tiryns over the last 120 years (up to 2001) have brought to light and life one of the most important Bronze Age centres, but in the Eastern Mediterranean. The palace on top of the citadel at Tiryns is, on account of its good preservation and particularly clear internal arrangement, the representative example par excellence of palatial architecture in the Mycenaean period. The guidebook prepared by Dr. Alkestis Papademetriou fills a large void in the bibliography. Not only is it the first detailed guidebook in 20 years dedicated exclusively to this unique archaeological site; it is also the first to take into account the results of the recent excavations conducted by the German Archaeological Institute during the 1970s and 1980s, under the directorship of the pre-eminent archaeologist, the late Klaus Kilian. These radically changed our picture on many aspects of the habitation of Tiryns during the Bronze Age. The author knows better than anyone else, for she has worked there as a collaborator of K. Killian in the excavations, as a researcher on Iron Age Tiryns and as a principla officer of the IVth Ephorate of Antiquities, responsible for the site. The guidebook with its pertinent texts and lavish illustrations, is an essential companion for today's visitor.
