Avtarjeet Dhanjal's book is of course, about an artist and the discovery of his creativity and of his personal means of expression. Shelagh Hourahane "The slate blocks come to sculptural life, magically, only when the candles were lit, inviting our ritual participation. The transience of the flame endows the luminaries with the power to shift the slate blocks from the timelessness in which they dwell, and bring them to co-exist in our own existential dimension, with its unforgiving, measurable duration. The senses of sight, smell (of burning candle wax) and the strong tactual blackness of the blocks overlap, as we embrace the ever-evolving sculptural situation. The fullness of our sentient being heightens our sense of self and gives it solemnity. Imagination slips from the grip of reason; the blocks become crumbs broken off from the vault of the night sky, with flickering stars still embedded in them". Jacques Rangasamy, in "Beyond Frontiers" (1999) As a child growing up in a small village in India, I wanted to read a book that my mother had locked up in her sandook (closet). I wanted to hold the torch my uncle had but never allowed me to play with. I dreamt of generating electricity to light up my village and drive away the darkness and the ignorance. I wanted to read more books and draw pictures on every piece of paper I could find. I also wanted to look closely into the big eyes of Kamla, who was the daughter of the village shopkeeper and I wanted to understand the mystery behind the calm confidence of Roshani a woman, whose body always seemed to glow from within. Above all, I wanted to weave my own dreams and construct a new reality for which I had no precedents or models around me. I feel most inclined to create a multi-dimensional installation that celebrates my intuitive link with the infinite or to capture with my camera a sliver of light over the horizon, or to share my realizations through writing.
