What valuable lessons in educational theory and practice can be learned by observing schools in another culture? This is the question that sent the author for a year to the Netherlands - to a country he knew little of and a language he had to learn. He wanted to be able to observe as a complete outsider. This work provides an insight into the day-to-day life of a Dutch elementary school, into how the teachers work, and into the difficult choices teachers face every day and how they make decisions. The author is not uncritical of what he observed, noting for example the struggles of children with non-Dutch cultural backgrounds to "make it" a predominantly Dutch school "climate". The value of comparative studies between different educational systems is almost entirely unrealized, simply because of language difficulties. Lessons learnt by the author include: the importance of community in the lives of both teachers and students; the value of small school size; how close face-to-face relationships help in the growth and development of children; and the usefulness of collaboration between teachers.
