Jørgen Michaelsen is a Danish visual artist who, since the early 1990s, has developed an artistic practice encompassing a wide variety of different mediums, including text, collage, video, object, painting, sound, and printed matter. Michaelsen is best known, however, for his installational pieces. Indeed, installations provide him as an intergeneric medium which physically/concretely and discursively/ thematically orchestrates his output, enabling the artist to mediate dialectical tensions between subordinate sets of 'individual statements' and overarching macrostructures into which these statements are inscribed in a 'generalizing' form. It is, then, entirely of a piece with this approach that branches of knowledge such as museology, genetics, and political science, all of which address the relation of parts to the whole, are a key focus for Michaelsen. While the documentation of processes per se has not figured prominently in Michaelsen's oeuvre, State of Nature might seem initially to buck the trend. For this book offers readers an unprecedented opportunity to become acquainted with a significant selection of Jørgen Michaelsen's drawings, all produced in conjunction with the artist's other activities. Culled exclusively from the stock of drawings executed in 2008, the present selection might well seem to invite speculation about possible iconographic, thematic, or other lines of development. However, the artist has opted for a non-chronological presentation. So if evolutionary concepts and perspectives preoccupy Michaelsen, as they obviously do, this would suggest that his focus is primarily on genetic considerations as a forward-looking dynamic rather than on a mapping-out conceived of as the closure of a field.
