Sehr gutes Ex. - Polnisch und Englisch. // Galleries Outside the System / Unique for the Polish art scene under communism was the existence of independent (autonomous, alternative and non-institutionalized) art galleries that operated outside the official state-controlled mainstream. Established and run most often by 'disobedient' artists, art theoreticians and critics, they developed their own programs and pursued their own individual strategies. While they had minimal finances at their disposal, were mainly located in accidental venues hastily converted for the purpose and their activity was most often ignored by the press and media of the regime, they played a major role in awareness-raising and the development of contemporary art. Operating outside the established mainstream, they did not enjoy any protection. Sometimes their activity was repressed or curbed by all kinds of offices and institutions; some were closed down for political reasons. The first independent institution, set up in 1955, was Galena Krzywe Koto in Warsaw. It was followed three years later by Galena Krzysztofory in Krakow. A number of others were established in the 1960s: Galena odNOWA in Poznah, Foksal in Warsaw, Laboratorium-Galeria EL in Elblig, Galena Mona Lisa in Wroclaw. The early 1970s saw the birth of new galleries, including Galeria Akumulatory 2,0.N., Wielka 19 in Poznari, GaleriaAdres in todz, Permafo in Wroctaw, Labirynt in Lublin, Galeria PI in Krakow, Galeria Tak in Bydgoszcz, Repassage, later also Galeria Piwna 20/26 in Warsaw. New ones were set up in the 1980s, including Galeria AT in Poznah, Wschodnia in todz, Remont and Dziekanka in Warsaw, Galeria Potocka in Krakow, Zaktad nad Fosq and Galeria X in Wroctaw. At one time Poznah alone had as many as six alternative galleries. The common denominator for all of them was the serious treatment of the arts and, despite the principles imposed by the ruling system, the observance of the overriding idea of free artistic expression. After the political transformation of 1989 it seemed that the mission of independent galleries and those outside the mainstream had in large measure come to an end and that their charismatic objectives and practices would be taken over by mainstream autonomous art institutions. Indeed, many of the above galleries discontinued their operations in the early 1990s, not of their own choice, however. Paradoxically, the implementation of the freedom they subscribed to was their doom. Many did not withstand the pressure of the market rules introduced so abruptly; they lost their venues and resources for continuing operations.
