[From Introduction] This book provides the visitor to Cracow with a collection of the most popular legends connected with this city and can serve as a useful source complementary to guidebooks.The origin of the legend as a literary genre goes back to the Middle Ages, when epic poems describing the lives of the saints and martyrs were popular all over Christendom. The genre developed during the subsequent centuries and its denotation was considerably broadened. In the Romantic period, when poetry looked for sources of inspiration in folk tales and oral tradition the attitude towards legends was changed. Legends started to be treated as living material for literary elaboration. It was then that the genre incorporated the folk tale as its integral part and the elements involving miraculous interventions of supernatural powers in human life interpreted in terms of religious beliefs came to be emphasized. In Poland almost every region, every city and town have their own legends handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. That is why very frequently a given legend has several versions which differ considerably from one another. Also some plots are known in several regions and they intermingle and appear in many legends. One should not interpret the legends literally, as the historical information in them is not always precise. On the other hand, they give the average person an insight into the past and make historical events more vivid and interesting.
