In September 1939, Karol Estreicher jr (1906-84), Polish historian of art, professor and the head of museum at Jagiellonian University, evacuated the famous St Mary's Church altar by Wit Stwosz from Cracow to Sandomierz. Following the outbreak of WWII and the crushing of his division, he moved to France where, on Gen. Sikorski's orders, he safeguarded works of art evacuated from Poland, which he took away to England shortly before the French capitulation. In the years 1940-45 Major Estreicher led the Polish office for restitution of Polish property by the Polish government in London. He was a co-founder and active member of the Vaucher Committee, tasked with keeping a record of works of art stolen by the Nazi in occupied territories, as well as a register containing the names of looters (in excess of 600 names). In the years 1945-47 Estreicher was the most effective Polish restitution officer of stolen national cultural treasures, operating on the territories of the former Third Reich. In May 1946 he retrieved and brought back to Cracow the St Mary's Church altar, paintings by Rembrandt and Canaletto, as well as numerous other famous works of art. His "Cultural Losses of Poland" crowns the many years of the restitution offices' activity in London. The documents collected in this volume (sourced from the chanceries of the German authorities and the Polish Underground state) depict the fate of multiple works of art, book collections, archives and architectural monuments about which all data would have been lost for ever without the endeavours by the team headed by K.Estreicher. These documents demonstrate how many of the plundered Polonica have not been returned to Poland, and are still to be found in Germany or Austria. They also describe those works which had been 'liberated' by the Allied armed forces and entrusted to the capacious archival, library and museum storerooms in the Soviet Union, the USA, Great Britain and France.
