Its administrative borders were preserved until as late as the 20th century. After 1815 the territory was government ruled, while the title of Duchess of Lowicz was vested on Joanna Grudzinska, wife of Great Prince Constantine. It is believed that the Duke of Lowicz title was first used in the mid 14th century by primate Skotnicki, although the name of the Lowicz Duchy first appeared in an inventory of Lowicz archbishop estate in 1739. Tradition and social consciousness established the name of Lowicz Ksiezaks over centuries, and the name is still valid for many local farmers. Ksiezaks stood out among other ethnic groups first of all thanks to their colourful striped costumes, whose history goes back to the 1830s. At the beginning, red background was decorated with narrow, modestly coloured stripes, which over time became as colourful as rainbow. At the end of the 19th century red was replaced with orange, and the 20th century brought the liking for cold colours: blue and green. [..] Ksiezaks also developed their original methods of house decoration, predominantly with paper cut-outs, which in cottages near Lowicz could be found as early as in the mid 19th century. At first, single elements were stuck directly onto walls, picture frames or oven tiles. Eventually, three forms of cut-outs were developed, usually glued onto white cardboard. Their distinctive common feature was their bountiful colourfulness. Rectangular and long "kodra" type cut-outs were hanged at ceiling beams, while round "stars" were placed tween them. Free space on walls between pictures was adorned with "ribbons" made of two vertical stripes, while walls between windows were perfect for broad "kodra" cut-outs, depicting genre scenes. In the interwar period women making cut-outs started to create "open-work stars", not for the purpose of house decoration, but rather for selling them to tourists. Along with cut-outs, Ksiezak used so-called "spiders", bouquets of woollen or tissue-paper flowers and embroidered cloth, which created almost a fairy tale atmosphere in their houses. The quantity and variety of decoration was not only a proof of wealth, but first of all, a reason for pride. "People of the Lowicz region.. Everybody who has ever met them must remember tall, dignified, strong and healthy figures dressed in colourful outfits. And when noblest of them sit in church, they look as if legendary Roman senators came to deal with the country's future". In such words they were described in 1913 by Aniela Chmielinska, who in the early 20th century established the first Lowicz ethnographic museum.
