23 S.; illustriert; qu.-8°; geheftet. Gutes Ex.; Einband minimal berieben. - Texte in Englisch. - Mit Vita des Künstlers. // The photographs in the Hometown cycle are C-type prints 54 by 80 CentimetreS in dimension. There are five numbered and signed copies of each photograph. This catalogue contains 56 pictures accompanied by the dates on which they were taken. // I didn't plan it and it was not a spontaneous idea either; it came about through chance. I just wanted to take a few photos for the book I was preparing for my parents and sister. It was 1993 and I happened to be down in Wabrzezno for Christmas. There was all the media-created hype about the coming Y2K. I rose at 8 o'clock on New Year's Day and went out to SEE what the world looked like in the new millennium and wanted to take a few pictures to remember that first day of the year 2000 better. When I had them developed, I experienced a kind of shock. In the pictures WERE places that have known forever and yet they didn't look the way I had thought they actually looked, they were filthy and ugly. I was hurt by this and decided to carry on with the project. In time I came to see that there was more to it than I was originally aware of, but it right at the beginning I did not realise it. Krzysztof Zielinski (excerpt from an interview by Anna Bujnowska) / (Vorwort) -- The photographs in this cycle are imbued with an atmosphere of light sadness and concentration. What is also striking is their curious, hardly definable lyricism, completely devoid of sentimentality and frilly ornamentation. Bare, unadorned truth of a place is shown, its beauty and ugliness (and all that lies between these two extremes), laziness and energy, liveliness and stagnation. In the second part of Hometown (dated from 2002) significant changes can be noticed, firstly in the colours: they become lighter, cooler and more delicate. The dominant ones are silvery greys, whites, pinks, pistachio greens and dimmed blues. The colours of the additional elements, in contrast, such as graffiti, signs, kiosks, portals, gutters, etc., become intense, even sharp. Thus there appears a whole palette of very defined, as well as exceptionally subtle, pastel colour combinations.
