Ján Albrecht (1919 Bratislava 1996 Bratislava) Education Ján Albrecht was a teacher, musicologist, violinist, violist and founder of the Musica aeterna ensemble. He got his early music training as a violin student of Georg Actardjief. His performance horizons were then extended through playing with friends (in the so called Childrens Quartet), in private lessons (studying viola) and at the Church Music Society concerts (playing violin). Ján Albrecht commenced his formal musical studies at the Bratislava Conservatory in 1937 with prof. Gabriel Pauliny. After World War II he began playing professionally in the National Opera orchestra, both as a violinist and a violist. He completed his studies at the Conservatory in 1950. Next he studied, until 1954, at the Music Academy in Bratislava in the viola studio of prof. Rudolf Hofmann. Ján AlbrechtProfessional Life Already during his student years, Ján Albrecht (nicknamed Hansi by his family and friends) complemented his performing career with an interest in a wide array of topics of artistic and scientific nature. His emphasis shaped up to be the theory of art, natural sciences and humanities. In articles such as Expressionism and its Radicalistic Evaluation, Generalization of Euler's Formula of Binominal Exponents, To Some Themes of Aesthetics, Albrecht displayed the ability to give a unique insight into a variety of aesthetic and mathematical topics. He published the textbook Theoretical Rudiments of Violin Playing in 1957. The 1950s seem to be the starting point of Ján Albrecht's intensive and long-lasting interest in fine arts, aesthetics and music that found its expression in numerous manuscripts, studies, essays, reviews, textbooks, books and editorial activities. The literary output of Ján Albrecht that documents his interest in the theory of art and humanities consists of hundreds of articles written mostly in German and, to a lesser degree, in Slovak. Tutor and Lecture 1955-1966 After leaving the National Opera Orchestra, Ján Albecht started his career as a teacher at the Department of Music Education of the Faculty of Education in Bratislava 1960-1967 teacher at the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Philosophy 1967-1982 teacher at the Department of Music Education of the Faculty of Education in Trnava and at the Department of Chamber Music at the Music Academy in Bratislava. Musica aeterna During his official music-teaching career, Ján Albrecht founded the chamber ensemble Collegium musicum, followed by the Circle of Friends of Early Music in 1968. It was the latter group that became the foundation of Musica aeterna the first ensemble in Slovakia focusing on early music performance practice. From the very beginning, its emphasis lied in the revitalisation of the domestic music from the 16th century onwards. Work and Albrecht House 1970s Ján Albrecht published first volumes of Fontes Musicae in Slovacia, (sheet music series of early domestic music) and the textbook Musical Aesthetics for students at the Faculty of Education 1980s Albrecht published Features and Transformations of Baroque Music and Essays on Art. At the same time, he was the leader of the ensemble Musica aeterna, he was editing new volumes of early music from Slovak sources (Castor and Pollux), he was publishing reviews, papers, scholarly articles and was organising informal artistic meetings in his house. After his retirement in 1982 Albrecht kept busy as a writer, editor and musicologist as well as a researcher in the field of aesthetics and in the examination of early music sources. Up to 1989 he was still heading the viola and chamber music studios at the Music Academy in Bratislava. His house on Kapitulská Street turned into a hotspot for his students, colleagues, artists, scientists, active musicians and enthusiasts simply for everyone with a deep interest in art, humanities, sciences and mathematics. Along with his wife Viera, Ján Albrecht formed in his house (already known simply as Albrecht House) an environment that was generously open to new thoughts, discussion, controversial debate and, from time to time, bon viveur gatherings. In the 1990s, Albrecht completed his work on the manuscript Errinerungen eines Pressburger Musikers (Memories of a Bratislava Musician) and he lectured at the Vienna University. In addition, he revised his Die Geisteswelt des Schönen (A Spiritual World of Beauty) while continuing to write new articles. Between 1992 and 1993, Ján Albrecht underwent serious eye and heart surgeries. On November 20, 1996 he died unexpectedly in the garden of his house on Kapitulská Street. Unappreciated by the former regime During the communist regime the highest award that Ján Albrecht received for his enduring educational activities (which were never limited to his official school loads) was that of the post of Assistant Professor (Lecturer). It has to be mentioned that the regime was often represented by Ján Albrecht's closest colleagues teachers, lecturers and professors at the Academy. A long overdue appreciation of Ján Albrecht's lifelong educational and musicological work came shortly after the collapse of the communistic regime. He became Associate Professor in 1991 as well as the head of the Slovak section of the European String Teachers Association (1991), followed by full professorship (1995). He received the Slovak Music Fund Award in 1991. On December 19, 1996, a month after his death, Ján Albrecht was in memoriam awarded the Honorary Award of the City of Bratislava. More than a hundred years of the Albrecht familys dedication to art, science and education and to the cultivation of the cultural life in Bratislava can be traced in countless historical records (starting with Ján's grand-father Johann Albrecht, who was a teacher at the Royal Catholic Hungarian High School, then the headmaster of the German Realschule on Zochová Street and finally a lecturer at the Bratislava Municipal Museum). With the passing of Ján Albrecht, the Albrecht family lost its last remaining male heir. 1995, Hardcover/gebunden, wie neu, 363g, 1. Aufl.
