In der Novelle erinnert sich ein älterer Herr an seine unerfüllte Kinder- und Jugendliebe. Die Hauptpersonen Reinhard Werner und Elisabeth sind schon vom Kindesalter an eng befreundet. Der fünf Jahre ältere Reinhard begeistert Elisabeth durch Märchen, die er für sie auf Zettel schreibt. Außerdem besitzt er einen Pergamentband, in dem er seine Erlebnisse in Gedichten festhält, ohne dass Elisabeth davon weiß. Schon in diesen jungen Jahren ist Reinhard sich bewusst, dass er sein Leben mit Elisabeth teilen möchte. Daran ändern auch eine neue Schule und neue Jungenfreundschaften nichts. Als Reinhard siebzehn Jahre alt ist, rückt für ihn der Moment der Trennung von Elisabeth immer näher, weil er zur Ausbildung fortgehen muss. Kurz vor seiner Abreise verspricht er ihr, er werde weiterhin Märchen für sie verfassen, die er ihr dann mit den Briefen an seine Mutter schicken werde. Das freut sie sehr, denn sie kann sich eine Zeit ohne Reinhard nicht vorstellen. Am Tag vor seiner Abreise versammelt sich eine große Gesellschaft, um von Reinhard Abschied zu nehmen. Sie verbringen den ganzen Tag zusammen. Als Reinhard wieder nach Hause zurückkehrt, verfasst er sogleich wieder ein Gedicht, das er in seinen Pergamentband schreibt, welcher schon zur Hälfte gefüllt ist... Theodor Storm (1817-1888) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, der als Lyriker und als Autor von Novellen und Prosa des deutschen Realismus mit norddeutscher Prägung bedeutend war.
