Knossos Calendar: Minoan Cycles of the Sun, the Moon, the Soul & Political Power

Jack Dempsey’s Knossos Calendar threads together archaeology, ritual time, and the political imagination of Bronze Age Crete to argue that Minoan society orchestrated its life around celestial and seasonal cycles. The book contends that timekeeping—through sun and moon alignments, ritual calendars, and the supposed journeys of the soul—infused governance and religious authority with a cosmological legitimacy. Central to the argument is the Knossos throne, read as a symbolic locus where cosmic order and dynastic power intersect, signaling a statecraft inseparable from celestial timing. Dempsey situates Minoan symbols, such as the double-axe and horned iconography, within a broader framework of cyclical recurrence that legitimizes leadership and social memory. The work challenges linear, chronocratic readings of history by foregrounding ritualized repetition as a mechanism of political continuity and social cohesion. It also treats the palace as both a political instrument and a ceremonial stage where seasonal, solar, and lunar rhythms are enacted as public theater. The narrative blends archaeology, iconography, and textual interpretation to reveal how cyclical time underwrites Minoan sovereignty and the soul’s imagined journey. In its synthesis, the book presents a textured portrait of a civilization that binds cosmic cycles to earthly power, memory, and identity.^*
