Listening into the Archive is a systematic analysis of historical sound recordings as sources of colonial history. Audio recordings held in colonial archives are still principally treated as language and sound samples. The time has now come to listen to the narratives, the critical comments, and the positions adopted by the speakers. This book approaches this task by drawing on translations of voice recordings made in the Kalahari in 1908 and brought to Vienna by Austrian anthropologist Rudolf Pöch. The recordings are listened to and read in the context of colonial practices of knowledge production and the violent `collecting` of objects. The volume forms part of the series of theoretical works Analysis & Excess. Anette Hoffmann is a cultural scientist and curator living in Vienna. Taschenbuch.
