The growing influence of the Internet and other communication networks on our daily lives shows clearly that the security issues in such networks are of the uttermost importance. Motivated both by the theoretical questions and by the potential real-world applications, in this dissertation we study problems of secure cooperation in a distributed setting. First we study the problem of secure multi-party computation, which allows a set of n players to evaluate an agreed function of their inputs in a secure way, guaranteeing correctness and privacy even when some of the parties misbehave. We consider this problem in asynchronous networks and we focus on minimizing the number of bits sent between the parties during the computation. We propose a multi-party protocol which is optimally resilient and more efficient than previously known solutions. Then we turn to a problem very common in cryptography: it is not clear which computational assumptions are the best, but when we use a cryptographic system in a real-world setting, we must choose a concrete implementation based on specific assumptions. One way of dealing with this problem are robust combiners, which allow to construct systems based on the best assumption, without being able to tell which assumption is the best one. We generalize the notion of robust combiners in several ways, and propose constructions of combiners for various primitives.
