In conclusion, different factors play important roles in triggering the littoral-profundal habitat shift of juvenile burbot in Lake Constance. During autumn and winter, a decrease in the availability of substratum shelter in the littoral zone induced by a decrease in the lake level seems to be the most prominent factor forcing the largest burbot of age class 0 to leave the littoral zone. Because of the increased predation pressure when shelters become sparse in the littoral zone, this can be the ultimate factor causing the habitat shift. During summer, the high water temperatures in the littoral zone, together with the inability to tolerate the large temperature differences during a fast passing of the thermocline, are the two driving forces for the migration of age class 1 burbot to the profundal zone. The water temperature acts as an ultimate factor at this time. During autumn and spring, however, a decrease in the preferred temperature during distinct temperature changes in the littoral zone is more likely a proximate factor for this remarkable habitat shift.
