Twenty years of research in dynamic binaural synthesis have proven this technology a serious approach towards true-to-live audio rendering. However, still a number of questions remain: How close to reality is binaural simulation today? What pitfalls – qualitatively and quantitatively – are associated with achieving true perceptual transparency, and how can they be solved? What are the future perspectives of this promising technology? In order to answer these questions at least partly, this doctoral dissertation gathers a number of scientific publications devoted to the description of the state of the art of dynamic binaural synthesis today, to its continued technical improvement and to the perceptual evaluation of the achieved progress.
