A painter of the elements, J. M. W. Turner depicted in his landscapes natural forces such as wind, fire, and water with an emphasis on their considerable destructive power and man s raw vulnerability in the face of it. And be they storm scenes, avalanches, or disasters at sea, Turner s oil paintings and watercolors were also informed by contemporary research in the natural sciences.Conceived by the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg and edited by leading Turner experts, this volume comprises eighty-five masterpieces from the Tate Gallery in London that are also scheduled for the National Museum in Krakow and the UK s newly opened Turner Contemporary. The works presented here exemplify Turner s extensive knowledge of nature and the impact of its forces, garnered from a lifelong fascination, and show that important developments in the artist s technique over the course of several decades mirrored the many new scientific insights of the time. Especially significant is Turner s stunningly realistic depiction of light, which made many of his canvases seem to actually glow. With 150 lush, full-color illustrations, this volume shows how Turner s ever-deepening understanding of the natural world and of light in particular earned him his place in the pantheon of great European artists.".

Turner was known to his contemporaries as a painter of the elements. In his landscape paintings he created new, unusual combinations of earth, water, air and fire and closely examined their interactions. His lifelong observations of the natural world gave him fundamental insights into the truth of nature and supported his increasing fascination with the fusion of the elements. Turner`s vision of the elements as a singular power fused together by the forces of nature was closely linked to contemporary research in the natural sciences. New discoveries and perceptions replaced the traditional teachings of the four classical elements and so freed them for a new type of artistic appropriation. In light of this background, landscape painting during Turner`s time was predisposed to revolutionise artistic methods. Curated by Ines Richter-Musso and Ortrud Westheider, the exhibition Turner and the Elements is dedicated to this exceptional artistic endeavour. By means of ninety-five works from the Täte in London and other British, German and American collections, Turner`s dynamic concept of landscape, his unconventional use of colour, and his nearly abstract watercolours and paintings will be interpreted in terms of the four classical elements. The five subject areas of Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Fusion illustrate the development of Turner`s landscape paintings over a period of many years and show how his painting technique was not only influenced by the latest scientific discoveries, but also aimed to draw the viewer into the painting using the power of the natural elements. Turner`s nearly abstract forms made the subject of a work the viewer`s own subjective experience when contemplating it - a visual strategy that was not to find wide acceptance until the Impressionists. This catalogue was created on the basis of an international symposium, the lectures of which can be read on the following pages. After the opening in Hamburg, the exhibition will travel to the Muzeum Narodowe in Krakow and then be shown at the newly opened Turner Contemporary in Margate, England.
