The following treatise does not claim to be considered as a work of art. Critics should know and remember the object for, and the circumstances under which it was written. With regard to its scientific bearing, however, it is necessary, to add a few words of explanation, in relation to several views advanced in the following pages; views which, although not contrary to the teachings of biology, have not, as yet, been referred to in books of physiology and pathology; or, if referred to, have not been accepted by physiologists of the present day.
