Take a walk through the woods in Lyndhurst, the capital of the New Forest. Look out for wildlife, go back in time, and meet a local dragon slayer. This is a circular four-mile route. You’ll walk through heathland and forest, along a main path. It’s suitable for sturdy pushchairs and wheelchairs but be aware that after wet weather big puddles might block the way. Dogs are welcome across the New Forest, but make sure you’re familiar with the rules set out to protect forest animals at newforestnpa.gov.uk Here are a few important points before you get started: Some stories include grizzly details. Think violent kings and dragon slaying. Park at Bolton’s Bench car park, which is free. If the car park is full, there are other free car parks on the same road, or you can follow signs back into Lyndhurst town centre and use the pay and display. It will take around four minutes to walk to the first story. You will have to cross a main road (Beaulieu Road) after story two, and further down the same road after story five. There are no traffic lights but there is very good visibility and usually minimal traffic. There is a large pond at story four. Please keep your distance from forest animals. There are some gentle hills but most of the walk is fairly flat. There’s an optional big hill at story six. You should be able to avoid puddles but if it’s been raining you might want wellies. You could bring a picnic and picnic blanket – the best spot is at the beginning/end of the tour at Bolton’s Bench. If you’ve got a magnifying glass, bring it along. Don’t worry if you haven’t got one. Bikes are not allowed on the final leg of the route.
