There is a large Taiwanese population in Queens, New York - the most diverse county in the United States. While Taiwanese and Mainland Chinese mingle freely here, the Taiwanese strive to maintain their character, with cultural, linguistic and gastronomic differences from other Chinese. -- This exhibition has been designed to capture a transition, a change, or an inner mind adjustment and new life adaptation relating to the Taiwanese immigrant process. Most artists in this exhibition are not associated with the art scene typ9ically seen in Soho, Chelsea or similar quarters of New York City. They do share a far more important quality than geographical location: a persistent attitude toward the pursuit of a career in creative art. Nexus is an open-ended departure from an art historical argument that sees Taiwan as a branch of Chinese culture towards a link with the islander, immigrant and colonized character. Here, the interest is to concentrate on the transformation of immigrants and how this is reflected in contemporary art. --- This exhibition shows the works of 9 Taiwanese artists based in Taiwan, 10 artists based in new York and 1 artist based in San Francisco. Some use traditional media, such as acrylic on canvas, or photographs; many are mixed-media installations, video installations or performance art. - Each is illustrated in full color. --- Also included are essays: The Nexus: From Taiwan to Queens, NY by Thomas H.C.
