Francis Hincks Dobbin (1850-1932) was born in Watertown, New York. His family came to Peterborough in Upper Canada about 1853. Between 1864-1869 Dobbin was a press boy at the Peterborough Review, working for Robert Romaine. He worked his way up through the newspaper. In 1881 he left the Review to become manager of the Lindsay Post. In 1887 he returned to the Review as publisher and general manager. He retired in 1914. Dobbin was a member of City Council, president of the Peterborough Board of Trade, president of the Agricultural Society, secretary of the 1929 Old Home Week Committee. During World War I Dobbin was secretary for the local Patriotic Fund and the postwar Soldier Relief Commission and President of the Canadian Press Association. He was also an accomplished local historian and author, writing a long running newspaper series on local history, also the book "Our Old Home Town" and several other historical publications.
