This is a comprehensive treatment of the gunpowder industry from its beginning shortly after Maine became a state until its end in the early twentieth century. Extensive use is made of maps, photographs and drawings. Mills in the nineteenth century were built where they could use water power, such as in Gorham-Windham, North Buckfield-Sumner, Camden and Warren, Procuring raw materials, their preparation, and the various other steps of making powder are described with a minimum of technical language. There were three major types of black powder: military, for rifles and cannons used in warfare; blasting, for use in mines, quarries, clearing land of stumps and rocks, preparing railroads cuts, etc.; and sporting powder for hunting. The industry was hazardous, with frequent loss of life and property. Original newspaper accounts are used to describe many of the disasters. The mills changed ownership several times over the years. All of them suffered through the financial panic of the 1870's, with two going through bankruptcy. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the smaller mills went out of business, leaving only the large Oriental Powder Mills in Gorham-Windham, which was sold and closed in 1905,ending the black powder industry in the state, though a small smokeless-powder factory operated in Gorham from 1907-1920. The Author: Maurice M. Whitten was born in Providence, R.I. He attended Maine schools and graduated from Colby College in 1945. He received his master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1949, and his Ph.D from Ohio State University in 1971. Whitten is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, History of Science Society, National Science Teachers Association, the Maine Historical Society, and the New England Association of Chemical Teachers.
