In this brief memoir, Cpl. Shepard tells the story of his wounding at the Battle of the Wilderness, his subsequent care at a nearby Confederate hospital, and his repatriation by a Union force sent specifically to recapture their wounded comrades. A moving personal experience written by a literate member of the 146th NY. The memoir is fully annotated, illustrated, and indexed. The 146th NY (the Fifth Oneida) was recruited from Oneida County and the Utica/Rome, NY, area. The Regiment fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness Campaign, Petersburg, Five Forks and the Appomattox Campaign. Shepard spent his life after the War in Rome, NY, Oneida County, western NY (Cherry Creek, Jamestown), the Fingerlakes region and Lewis County. He died in Penn Yan, Yates County, NY. The editor of this volume, Raymond W. Smith, is a Historical Preservation Program Analyst in the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, & Historical Preservation in Albany, NY. Mr. Smith discovered Shepard's unsigned manuscript in the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society in an old ledger from the Adirondack Lodge in Brantingham Lake, NY. The story of Smith's search for the author of the ms, recounted in this book's introduction, is itself a treatise on historical research. Foreword by Michael Russert. 51/2" x 81/2", softcover, Illustrations, Notes, Index, pH neutral paper. Copyright 1988. Paperback, Label: Schroeder Publications, Schroeder Publications, Product group: Book, Published: 1998-11-01, Studio: Schroeder Publications, Sales rank: 5031924.
