The author's father was a Checker Cab driver who was arrested, tortured, convicted of murder, and imprisoned for life, and after almost two years of imprisonment, was substantially exonerated by a pardon. It also recounts the eighty-year story of the author's immigrant Jewish family who came from Eastern Europe in 1912 and made their way to Chicago. It is an extraordinary and touching act of filial piety designed to defend the memory of a dead father. In 1921 at age twenty, Philip Fox, the author's father, was a Checker Cab Company driver-owner during a bitter taxi war between the Yellow Cab Company and Checker. With the aid of a license system obtained from a corrupt city administration. Yellow sought to drive Checker cabs out of business. On the night ofJune 8, 1921, a dark automobile with five or six passengers drove past a Yellow Cab station firing bullets. A Yellow Cab driver was killed. Soon after, the police went to a Checker hangout and arrestedPhilip Fox and another Checker driver-owner. All night long, at intervals, two Yellow Cab lawyers, former Judge George Barrett and Ben Samuels (my erstwhile Sunday School teacher), interrogated the two drivers. From time to time, until "confessions" were obtained, Judge Barrett would tell the police to "take them away," and the police would take them individually to a dark room where the police beat them mercilessly and lied to them extravagantly. Fortunately, the story of that brutal treatment was told and preserved in the dissenting opinion of Illinois Supreme Court Justice Duncan in 319 Illinois 606. At last, both men were forced to confess that they were in the murder car. Philip Fox's confession was repudiated and was so tainted it was never used but the other driver's confession implicated Philip and was admitted against both of them.
