From 1922 to the early 1950s, the eastern half (and now, the Historic Columbia River Highway) was a continuous ribbon linking Troutdale and The Dalles. With the construction of the "water grade" freeway (I-84) in the late 1950s, much of the original roadway was either destroyed or abandoned. This guide covers the intact portion of the original highway between Troutdale and Dodson. Many of the remaining fragments of the highway can still be found between Dodson and Mosier and offer exceptional day hikes. The original section from Mosier to The Dalles is still open to auto traffic and offers a beautiful trip with entirely different scenery than that which is found in the western end of the Gorge -- a wonderful example being Rowena Plateau. The purpose of this guide is to show you the location of some of the scenic wonders and items of interest along the highway as well as to provide a brief history of each area. Mileage in the text is based on distance to or from McMenamins Edgefield near Troutdale and the interchange with I-84 near Dodson. The map provided in each section shows distance to Edgefield on the left and distance to the I-84 interchange at Dodson on the right. The guide includes a history, a map, a brief geology of the gorge and is broken into 14 separate segments with photographs in black and white. This is followed by a quiz on the historic highway and a number of ads placed by local businesses. Because the map was published in 1994, it does not include information on the walking and biking segments near the Mosier Twin Tunnels at the east end that were recently opened to the public.
